ST PETER’S CHURCH
Architect: Alan Cameron Walker
St Peter’s Church was designed by notable architect, Alan Cameron Walker, and built in 1918. Walker apprenticed under prominent architect and civil servant, Henry Hunter, and designed several other significant works, including the Hobart General Post Office, the National Mutual Life Building and St David’s Cathedral cloisters addition.
Although not as common in Tasmania, St Peter’s Church is of the Romanesque Revival style of architecture. This is evident in the church’s rounded arch windows and doors, and the use of brick masonry.
To fund the church’s ambitious and grand design, the Kempton Catholic community rallied together and held many events to raise the money required to finance the build. Upon completion, the impressive and striking design drew people from New Norfolk, Brighton, Richmond and Hobart to attend the opening.
Like so many churches of its time, it was renovated in 2015, and is now a cosy Airbnb where guests can stay and admire the beauty of the original timber frames and stained-glass windows.
