The Commissariat

Perched proudly at the top of the block, The Commissariat is a whitewashed sandstone survivor of Oatlands’ earliest days. Built by the chain gang under Lt Vachelle’s watchful eye, it once brimmed with rations, clothes, tools, and even weapons, for the fledgling convict outpost. In 1830 it supplied Governor Arthur’s infamous “Black Line.” Restored in 2013, it still has its original bread oven, a tasty echo of the past.
