Open Practice: 1+2 Architecture

1+2 ARCHITECTURE is one of Tasmania’s most awarded and publicly acclaimed practices. Our work is distinguished by its environmental and social awareness, meticulous attention to detail, and commitment to user satisfaction.

Our diverse portfolio includes projects for state and local government, commercial and multi-residential developments, educational facilities, commercial fitouts, and private homes – often in heritage sensitive urban areas or environmentally sensitive non-urban contexts.

1+2 Architecture’s office was originally constructed in the early 20th century, serving a variety of utilitarian purposes over the decades—from garage and workshop spaces to animal feed storage. From the late 1960s until 2018, it was home to the well-known automotive crash repair business, Paul’s Bodyworks.

In 2019, the building underwent a significant transformation, becoming a contemporary architecture studio designed to enhance employee well-being, support collaboration, and foster a cohesive workplace culture.

As layers of old paint, automotive sanding dust, and overspray were carefully removed, traces of the building’s diverse history emerged—revealing historic painted signage, internal graffiti, and the original stone, brick, and refined timber structure. These discoveries provided a rich contextual foundation for the architectural interventions that followed, allowing a meaningful dialogue between the building’s past and its new chapter.
