Every House Has a History
Who lived in your house before you? What was it used for, who built it, and what stories might be hiding in the archives?
Every house has a history, and discovering it can reveal fascinating stories about the people, families and communities who came before us.
Join historian and researcher Dr Imogen Wegman from the University of Tasmania’s Family History Program for a practical introduction to researching the history of your own home. Drawing on the collections of the State Library and Archives of Tasmania, Imogen will show you where to look, what clues to follow and how to piece together the story of a building from the records it has left behind.
Discover how maps, photographs, rate books, electoral records, newspapers, directories and other archival sources can help uncover the changing lives of a house and its occupants.
Whether you live in an old cottage, a mid-century home or a much newer house, you’ll leave with new ways to look at the place you call home and some ideas for starting your own architectural detective work.
Come curious, bring your questions and discover the stories hiding in your own backyard.
