Layers Beneath Liverpool Street

What lies beneath your feet as you walk through Bank Arcade?

Deep below the arcade walkway are the remains of what is believed to be Hobart’s oldest known building — a place that has been hidden in plain sight for generations.

Join owner John Short as he takes you beneath the city streets to uncover the stories held within this fascinating site. Once home to Hobart’s first shop, the building has been altered, extended and rebuilt many times, with construction works recorded in 1806, 1812, 1835, 1860 and 1958.

Using historic photographs, artwork, archaeology and stories of the people who lived and worked here, John will reveal the layers of Hobart’s built history and share what his research has uncovered about the changing building and its occupants.

Come underground, look closer and discover a piece of Hobart’s earliest history hiding beneath the city we know today.
