Beneath the Civic City
What lies beneath one of Hobart’s grandest civic buildings?
Go below the historic Hobart Town Hall and discover a hidden world known simply as ‘The Underground’. Tucked beneath the building are a hallway and four intimate sandstone rooms, including the former constable’s room.
Once connected by a narrow staircase to the Town Hall courtroom above, these atmospheric spaces offer a glimpse into a very different chapter of Hobart’s civic and judicial history.
Step underground, explore the rough sandstone walls and cave-like rooms, and imagine the people who once moved between these spaces and the courtroom above.
Come down, look closer and uncover one of Hobart Town Hall’s lesser-known stories.
