Step inside one of Tasmania’s most remarkable modernist buildings and discover a church that was decades ahead of its time.
Set among native bushland in Taroona, with sweeping views across timtumili minanya/the River Derwent, St Pius X was designed by celebrated Tasmanian architect Esmond Dorney and opened in 1957. It is recognised as Australia’s first Modernist church and is listed on the Register of the National Estate for its heritage significance.
Look closely and you’ll discover a building unlike a traditional church. Its distinctive curved roof, lightweight steel structure, timber-lined interior and extensive glazing create a remarkable connection between inside and out. Natural light moves through the building, while views of the surrounding bushland become part of the experience of worship.
The relationship with the landscape continues beyond the building. The local community has worked to restore the native garden surrounding the church, helping to realise Dorney’s vision of a place where the architecture and bush setting work together.
The building’s importance has continued to be recognised. In 2017, the Australian Institute of Architects awarded St Pius X the Tasmanian Award for Enduring Architecture, celebrating Esmond Dorney’s design 60 years after the church was completed.
Come and have a look inside, experience the light, materials and sweeping roof for yourself, and discover why this small church has become such an important part of Tasmania’s architectural story.
