Jammed Within the Old Factory
What do jam, convict-era warehouses, contemporary art and a luxury hotel have in common?
Step inside one of Hobart’s most remarkable transformations and discover the story of the former IXL jam factory, now home to The Henry Jones Art Hotel.
English novelist Anthony Trollope once suggested Tasmania should make jam for the world. Henry Jones took up the challenge, and his jam factory became part of a remarkable waterfront precinct that has continued to evolve for almost 200 years.
Explore a collection of nine interconnected stone warehouses, dating from the 1820s onwards, and look closely at the details that reveal their industrial past. Arched goods entrances, Georgian-style windows, cold stores and warehouse spaces tell stories of a busy working waterfront, while later layers reveal the many lives these buildings have held, including warehouses, barracks, hotels and even a slum.
Today, historic stone walls sit alongside contemporary architecture and an impressive collection of Tasmanian art, creating a hotel where past and present meet at every turn.
Join the wonderful storytellers from The Henry Jones Art Hotel for a guided tour and discover the people, places and layers of history hidden within this extraordinary site.
Come and have a look, step through the past and see how an old industrial precinct has found a remarkable new life.
