Drip Village: A Suburban Story

Tucked into the suburban streets of Lutana, Drip Village is a fascinating neighbourhood shaped by industry, ingenuity and the urgent need for housing.

Built by the Electrolytic Zinc Company (EZ) between 1938 and 1952, the estate provided homes for specialist workers during a time when housing was in short supply. Today, its streets offer a glimpse into an important chapter of Lutana’s industrial and social history.

Join this guided walking tour and discover how material shortages and the cost of imported materials shaped the way these homes were built. Locally sourced materials, simple single-storey forms, in-situ concrete walls, tiled roofs and steel-framed windows created a distinctive and practical architectural character.

Look closer and you’ll spot the detail that gives the neighbourhood its name: the textured ‘drip’ render, found across many of the homes and now a defining feature of this unusual streetscape.

Come and have a look, hear the stories behind the houses and discover how industry, workers and the need for affordable housing helped shape this corner of Hobart.
