Discover the Stories Behind the Town

The Sorell History Society is throwing open its doors for you to take a close look at the many photos, records, maps, and artefacts in an extensive collection recording the fascinating history of one of Tasmania’s earliest colonial settlements.  You will also be able to chat with our local heritage volunteers and search the digital research portal for our collection to uncover details of the district’s people and places.

Take a closer look at Sorell and discover the people, places and stories that have shaped one of Tasmania’s oldest townships.

The Sorell History Rooms bring the district’s past to life through photographs, objects, maps, records and personal stories collected and cared for by the local community. From the deep history of the area to the people and events of more recent times, the collection reveals the layers of life that have shaped Sorell and its surrounding communities.

Explore the displays, uncover stories of everyday life and discover fascinating glimpses of places that have changed, disappeared or remained part of the landscape. You can also delve further through the Society’s growing digital collection, which brings thousands of local records and photographs together.

The History Rooms are more than a collection of objects. They are a community-held record of the people and places that make Sorell what it is today.

Come and have a look, uncover a few local stories and see Sorell through the eyes of the people who have lived here.
