Dwelling Among the Trees

What does it mean to build a house that sits lightly in its landscape?

Step inside Galea House, a family home designed by Tasmania’s highly regarded architect, Ray Heffernan and Paul Newman, in close collaboration with its owners.

Set among eucalyptus trees with views towards kunakyi / kunanyi / Mount Wellington, the house was designed to feel timeless, responding to its setting rather than competing with it.

Look closer and you’ll discover a thoughtful combination of modernist ideas and passive solar design. Slender steel columns support the gently raked ceiling, while generous north-facing glazing fills the home with winter sunlight. Polished concrete floors absorb the sun’s warmth and slowly release it back into the house.

The result is a home where architecture, landscape and climate work together. It is also a testament to what can happen when an architect, client and builder work with trust, respect and genuine collaboration.

Come and have a look, experience the light, materials and connection to the trees, and discover a remarkable example of Ray Heffernan’s contribution to Tasmanian architecture.

Open: Sat 7 Nov, 1.00pm – 4.00pm
