Earth As Architecture

What happens when one material becomes the heart of a home?

Tucked behind an existing property and wrapped in garden, Hard Core is a small house with a big idea. Designed by Matt Williams Architects, the home explores what can happen when a single architectural element is given many different roles.

At its centre is a massive rammed earth core. Every movement through the house brings you into contact with it, around it, through it or over it. Far more than a structural feature, the earth becomes the organising element of the home.

Look closer and discover how the rammed earth walls help moderate temperature, soften light and improve acoustics, creating a home that feels grounded, calm and tactile.

And then there is the simple pleasure of it. Earth becomes something solid, beautiful and deeply connected to the experience of living.

Come and have a look, touch the walls, follow the spaces around the earth and discover how one material can shape an entire home.
