Architect: Henry Hunter (1858)
Designed in the Victorian Academic Gothic style by architect Henry Hunter, this church features a square corner tower and spire, paired lancet windows, dormer windows, and an entry porch with a parapeted sandstone gable. The church was constructed in three phases: the nave, chancel, vestry, and tower/spire were built in 1858; the additional side aisle and chapel with a basement Sunday School room in 1862; and the top and middle vestries were finally added in 1895. The church precinct also encompasses a fine cottage garden and prayer labyrinth.
The church contains fine stained glass windows, some dating from 1864 and designed by the Staffordshire company of Clutterbuck, noted for their fluidity of style. The fresco ‘Adoration of the Shepherds’ by one of Australia’s most important painters of religious subjects, Joseph (‘Joe’) Luke Fleury (9 June 1872—2 June 1944). Several significant carved timber items by Ellen Nora Payne, a pioneer of the Tasmanian arts and crafts movement.
