Architect: Unknown (1880s)

One of Hobart’s biggest and best-located private homes, Corinda was built in the 1880s by wealthy timber merchant Alfred Crisp. Specialty timbers, including Tasmanian blackwood and Huon pine are used throughout this fine house atop Hobart’s historic Glebe, with views of kunanyi/Mt Wellington and the River Derwent.

Covering close to an acre, Corinda boasts one of the finest private gardens in the whole of Tasmania. Laid out in a series of “rooms”, or compartments, defined by yew and box hedges with antique urns, delightful topiary figures of native animals and tiers of espalier limes, it is richly planted to provide colour and botanical interest throughout the year. A magnificent Magnolia tree, more than 100 years old, is floodlit at night and visible for miles around. The garden received a major National Trust Award in 1995.

Open: Sunday 3 November 2024, 11am – 3pm
