Old Walls, New Occupations
Step inside one of Hobart’s oldest surviving educational buildings and discover a place that has spent more than 170 years teaching, learning and adapting.
Opened in 1850 as the High School of Hobart Town, the building became home to the University of Tasmania in 1892. Over the years, it has been used by a succession of Tasmanian educational institutions before becoming known as Domain House in the 1970s. In 2012, it returned to the University of Tasmania.
Look closely and you’ll discover the layers of its long history, from its original schoolhouse beginnings to the changes that have allowed it to continue serving new generations.
The building has also undergone careful restoration and adaptation, with architects working alongside heritage specialists to respect what came before while giving the place a new life.
Come and have a look inside, explore the old walls and discover how a building can continue to evolve while holding onto the stories of those who have passed through its doors.
