Building with the Earth

What happens when a house becomes a place to experiment, make and try something new?

Step inside Dodges Ferry House, a home built from the ground up by Hobart design and making studio Earthworm. Here, architecture is not simply designed and then handed over to someone else to build. Making is at the heart of the process.

Look closely and you’ll find an extraordinary amount of care in the details. Stonework, windows, fittings, joinery and even the garden have been made by hand, creating a home where materials and craftsmanship are impossible to separate from the architecture.

The result is deeply personal and wonderfully tactile. Every element tells a story about the people who made it, the materials they chose and the ideas they wanted to explore.

But this house is more than a finished project. It continues to evolve as a testing ground for new ideas, with the boundaries between designing, building and making deliberately blurred.

Come and have a look, get your hands around the details and discover what architecture can become when you make it yourself.
