EVERYONE DESERVES A HOME: MORE OF US TOGETHER

People are looking for affordable housing solutions they can undertake themselves, or with small groups of like minded people. They also want to remain connected to the things that matter in their lives – family, friends, work, schools, local shops to name a few. These things can be found in our older suburbs.

The panel will discuss ways of incrementally retrofitting our older suburbs, block by block, with more small-scale affordable housing. Come and hear about their recent work and get inspired.

Dr Damian Madigan – Registered Architect and practice-based housing researcher and Associate Professor, University of South Australia.

Damian coined the term “Bluefield” housing” to describe modest urban infill in established suburbs that doesn’t impact the existing character, heritage and streetscapes. Existing houses are retained, altered and extended with smaller housing options added; all are on individual allotments and located around a shared open space. Damian collaborated with the South Australian State Government and a group of local councils on the Future Living Code Amendment for Bluefield Co-located Housing. The amendment was adopted earlier this year.

Jane Hilliard – Founding Director and Head Designer/Registered Building Designer, Homeful by Designful, Tasmania.

Homeful makes good design available to more people whilst practising ‘enoughness’ – a holistic approach to providing what is needed to live a healthy, happy and reciprocal life with those around you and the environment and not taking or using more than this. Jane will present several recently completed “ancillary dwellings” that exemplify this values-led approach.

Homeful’s Cascade Ancillary Dwelling and Cato Ancillary Dwelling are open for ‘taking a look’ on Saturday 8 November.

Michi Moses – Registered Architect and 2023 Paul Pholeros Architecture Scholarship Recipient, Tasmania.

Michi is driven by a commitment to sustainable, equitable, and community centred design. Her research paper, “We’re all in this together”, explores alternative “collaborative housing” models, in particular cohousing. Founded by groups of likeminded people with a desire for community and sharing, Michi will throw a light on how these models can provide affordable, sustainable and socially diverse housing.

Jenny Edwards – Building Scientist and Owner and Director, Light House Archi Science, Australian Capital Territory.

Responding to the question “where will your kids live?”, Jenny will share insights about “Clever Co-housing” designed by her practice. Utilising large blocks in older suburbs and repurposing large, older homes, and where suitable adding one or more new dwellings, has allowed more than one family group live together on a single suburban block.  All projects delivered cost-effective homes that are highly efficient, all-electric, climate resistant, and highly liveable.

Session: Wednesday 12 November, 6pm-7:30pm (bookings required)
