The Garden Village Ideal

What can a suburban neighbourhood tell us about the way people once thought about work, community and everyday life?

Join archaeologist and heritage officer David Parham for a guided walk through the former Electrolytic Zinc (EZ) Company workers’ estate, a remarkable example of the garden village ideal in Tasmania.

Wander through the streets and avenues and look closely at the houses, gardens and layout of the neighbourhood. Designed by architect Walter Richmond Butler in the Arts and Crafts style, the homes and their setting reflect a very different approach to suburban development, one shaped by ideas about community, workers’ welfare and the relationship between people and place.

The estate was part of a broader system of welfare capitalism, where employers provided housing and other amenities as part of working life. Discover how the EZ Company’s ambitions, together with the economic and social conditions of the time, helped shape not only this neighbourhood but the wider northern suburbs of Hobart.

Come and have a look, hear the stories behind the streets and discover why this remarkable neighbourhood has been described as one of Australia’s finest expressions of the British garden village ideal.
