Architect: Core Collective (2019)
Hollow Tree House, formerly ‘Strathborough’, is an early 19th-century Georgian Colonial homestead in Tasmania’s Central Highlands. In 2017, the owners engaged Core Collective Architects with a vision to restore the house and stables to their original fabric, with new works being “distinctly modern but visually quiet and complementary.”
Working closely with Praxis Environment, layers of unsympathetic additions were removed to reveal original materials and features. Mid-20th century alterations were stripped away, reinstating the home’s simple form. Traditional tradespeople used locally sourced and recycled materials to carry out the restoration using authentic techniques.
Inside, the house revealed a time capsule of early finishes—convict-sawn timber floors, cedar joinery, and original lime-based paints were carefully preserved or reinstated. Structural repairs to thick sandstone walls were discreetly completed using lime grout and stainless-steel reinforcement.
Every new intervention was thoughtfully considered. The result is a respectful, restrained restoration—an inviting, light-filled home that honours its heritage while embracing a new chapter.
