We watched the last-minute bidding war on some items (looking at your chair, @other_furniture_) with absolute glee; because, together, you helped raise over $8000 for the Hobart Women's Shelter @hobartwomensshelter. Legends. THANK YOU!!

Your financial help plays a critical role in supporting service delivery and therapeutic programs, and fund strategic projects such as building long-term homes. Such programs provide opportunities for women and children to lead independent and fulfilling lives.

THERE'S STILL TIME TO BID IN THE SILENT AUCTION

The annual Sheltered [Ground] Exhibition may have finished up, but there's still time to bid on your favourite pieces in the Silent Auction. If you didn't make it to the exhibition launch last Friday, head to the auction site (link in bio) and check out what's on offer. If you haven't already, you'll need to register, then you can start bidding!

There's a beautiful selection of pieces up for grabs from Tasmanian artists and makers, including @ridgelinepottery @other_furniture_ @simonancherstudio @duncanmeerding @salleewarnerceramics @jake_walker_art @waldies.school and @touchingspace, plus lots more ceramics, lamps, jewellery, platters and furniture, as well as prints, photographs and original artworks.

Auction closes at 8pm on FRIDAY 15 NOVEMBER 2024.

Sheltered [Ground] is led and organised by the Tasmanian Emerging Architects and Graduates Network (EmAGN) @@emagn_tas. All proceeds go to the Hobart Women’s Shelter @hobartwomensshelter.

There are many people we would like to thank for making Open House Hobart 2024 fabulous; so many, we needed a separate post.

First, and most importantly, a huge shout out to the impeccably organised legend Katie Katos, who puts together the program each year. She's helped out by her sidekicks at the Tasmanian Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects @architects_tas (Jennifer, Fiona, Loren and Nina) and the Open House Committee.

Our precinct managers Tim, Loren, Fiona and Jen do an amazing job making sure everything runs smoothly on the ground in real time.

ALL our wonderful volunteers, building owners and custodians (too many of you to name) – we sound like a broken record, but you really help make Open House Hobart what it is each year. Thank you.

Nina Hamilton @nina.hamilton.photo keeps the social media and newsletters ticking over, then heads out to document the program. Natasha Mulhall @natashamulhallphotography provides even more coverage on the camera.

Chris and EmAGN Tas @emagn_tas crew put together the annual Sheltered [Ground] Exhibition and Silent Auction again this year. A big thank you also to the generous artists and makers who donated to this year's auction.

Hobart Coffee Roaster @hobartcoffeeroasters poured free coffee all weekend thanks to Catherine and Claire at Brickworks Design Studio @brickworksbp. Brickworks also hosts the volunteer breakfast and thank you drinks each year.

Lysaght @lysaght_australia kindly provided volunteer bags with a hat, drink bottle, sunscreen and jellybeans.

SeaLink Bruny Island @sealinkbruny added a third ferry to yesterday's schedule, for which we are incredibly grateful.

Finally, thank you to our Open House Hobart ambassador, Tim Ross @modernister, who popped by the volunteer breakfast on Saturday morning to officially open the weekend. We will see what we can do about a red suit for you. However, in managing expectations, we can't promise anything.

Whoa. You took a look – and from all reports, you loved it! Thank you to every single one of you who came out and supported our program this year. We particularly loved seeing so many kids and dogs!

You came from all round Tasmania, the mainland and we even had visitors from elsewhere in the world! You explored buildings and projects of all shapes, sizes, ages and persuasions – from historic gems to the latest award-winning architecture. You looked up, looked down, looked inside and behind. You climbed towers and descended into basements, and took in the many incredible views from different vantage points around the city and beyond. You took a sticky beak at how others live, work and play. And some of you caught a ferry to an island off an island off the big island just to visit buildings – that's the commitment we love to see.

What's on at Brickworks Design Studio?

FREE COFFEE! So don't forget to drop in for a refuel between 10am – 2pm.

And while you're there, check out the beautiful 4m long physical model of the Elizabeth Street Linear Precinct. The corridor is a central and important city spine connecting the waterfront with North Hobart. The model was commissioned as an engagement and investigation tool to inform the design work for the Elizabeth Street Vision Plan. The Plan intends to enhance the emerging nighttime economy and expand and improve pedestrian connections. While it's on display, you can HAVE YOUR SAY: just add stickers to areas you feel safe in, don't feel safe in, and areas you think need further consideration. The model was designed and produced by MANA Architects @m_a_n_a_architects for the Hobart City Council (HCC), and beautifully crafted by the talented Hamish Saul @hamish.saul.

It will be on display at Brickworks @brickworksbp the Open House Hobart headquarters all weekend, so check it out and add your sticker/s.

01. After a sold out show last night, Tim Ross @modernister popped by Brickworks Design Studio this morning for a mingle and official welcome at our volunteers' breakfast; he doesn't know this yet, but next year we will have an Open House red outfit for him, in the same style as his blue one.
02. If you're in the city, pop in to see the Fu–ta–who? 20 YEARS OF DESIGN BY FUTAGO
exhibition at 65 Murray Street (Level 6), which is on this week only. @futagodesign designed our branding 13 years ago, and we still love it. The building also has arguably the best staircase in Tasmania.

Entries close on Sunday 1/12/2023 at 11.59pm (AEDT). Winners will be notified via direct private messages on either Facebook or Instagram; and will be announced publicly via the Open House Hobart pages on Instagram + Facebook on Friday 8/12/2023.

• Entry is open to Australian residents only.
• Entrants must be 18 years or older of age.
• Entrants can enter as many photos as they like.

The exhibition presents ideas developed by students from the School of Architecture & Design at the University of Tasmania for multi-residential housing in Hobart to provide more diverse housing typologies closer to the city and services. These speculative ideas demonstrate how existing under-utilised sites could be transformed to provide new opportunities for urban living, transforming the city into a vibrant and socially, economically and ecologically sustainable environment.

ST JOHN'S PARK TOUR INFORMATION

Architects: John Lee Archer (1835)

St Johns Park is a historic group of convict-era buildings in New Town, including an old Sunday School, a Gothic Revival stone church and an orphanage. Three buildings will be open during the tour: the Old Sunday School (1882), St Johns Church (1834) and the Orphan Schools (1831).

Join architect Paul Johnston and philosopher Professor Jeff Malpas on a walk and talk tour of the site and discover the marvellous work of Kickstart Arts in the creative rejuvenation of the place with refreshments available from the Sunlight Kitchen Project on site. The tour will also take in St Johns Church and a visit to the small church museum.

Open: 10am – 1pm,
Tours: 10am, 11am and 12pm.

Tours Depart: From the Sunday School building, on the hill to the east of the church, where the Friends of the Orphan Schools have their historical interpretation centre.

At a time when the housing crisis only deepens, issues around the following provocation will be explored:

“urban densification is the cure for the housing crisis”

To respond to this provocation, we have brought together a panel of knowledgeable professionals. Not only will they share their insights about design, planning, and development of medium density housing in urban contexts, they will challenge the status quo and put forward their recommendations to turn the tide and make housing affordable for everyone. Equally, in acknowledgment of the wider community’s concerns about densification, panellists will shine a light on the possibilities and opportunities of urbanising the existing footprint.
