Who Broke the Australian Dream?

What happened to the Australian dream of having a place to call home?

Join Open House Hobart for a screening of SOLD! Who Broke the Australian Dream?, a funny, sharp and thought-provoking documentary that takes a closer look at Australia’s housing crisis and asks how we ended up here.

Hosted by comedian and renter Mark Humphries, the film takes a very personal journey through a problem that reaches far beyond the traditional image of the first-home buyer. Renters, families, young people, essential workers and others struggling to find secure housing all feature in a story about what it means when a safe and affordable home becomes increasingly difficult to access.

With Humphries’ trademark humour, SOLD! explores the history and systems that have shaped Australia’s housing market, including tax settings, rental conditions, housing supply, investment and the changing idea of the home as both somewhere to live and an asset. Along the way, the film meets people experiencing the housing crisis firsthand and speaks with journalists, researchers and housing advocates to unpack some surprisingly complex questions.

But this isn’t simply a film about the problem. SOLD! also looks at ideas for doing things differently, from improving renters’ security and increasing social and community housing to alternative housing models, more sustainable construction and changes to the systems that shape how homes are provided.

Directed by Bill Code, with Justine Moyle as producer and Craig Reucassel among the executive producers, the film brings together documentary storytelling, journalism and comedy to make a complex subject accessible and, at times, surprisingly entertaining.

Come along, have a laugh, think a little differently and join the conversation about one of the most important questions facing our communities:

What does it take to make sure everyone has a place to call home?
