A Civic Stage

Step into one of Hobart’s most beautiful public spaces and discover a place that has been at the heart of the city for more than 200 years.

St David’s Park began life as Hobart’s first burial ground in 1804, but its story has continued to evolve. Today, its lawns, gardens and historic rotunda provide a much-loved setting for gatherings, celebrations, performances and quiet moments in the city.

At the centre of the park stands the elegant St David’s Park Rotunda, a familiar landmark and a stage for community life. From music and public gatherings to weddings and civic occasions, the rotunda has helped make the park a place where Hobart comes together.

As you explore, look beyond the beautiful gardens and discover the layers of history held within the landscape. Surviving memorials and traces of the former cemetery reveal the stories of the people who came before, while the park itself reflects changing ideas about how cities create places for people to meet, gather and connect.

Come and have a look, discover the stories behind the park and rotunda, and see how this remarkable piece of Hobart has continued to serve as a civic stage for generations.
