Stories in Stone
Step inside one of Sorell’s most enduring landmarks and discover a place shaped by more than two centuries of community life.
The story of St George’s reaches back to 1820, with the present sandstone church built in 1883–84 on the site of an earlier church constructed largely with convict labour.
Look closely at the building’s warm sandstone walls, pointed-arch windows and distinctive Gothic details, and you’ll see a church that has remained a familiar part of Sorell’s landscape for generations.
Wander through the church and take time to explore the historic burial ground beyond. Together, the building and its grounds reveal layers of Sorell’s social, religious and colonial history, with the stories of generations of people still visible in the landscape.
Come and have a look, discover the details and uncover the stories held within one of Sorell’s oldest places of worship.
