Faith, History and Hidden Stories

Tucked within the historic grounds of St John’s Park, St John’s Church offers a fascinating glimpse into Tasmania’s colonial past and the role architecture played in the institutions of early Hobart.

Designed by colonial architect John Lee Archer, the Gothic Revival church forms part of a remarkable collection of nineteenth-century buildings associated with the former Orphan Schools. Its history is closely connected to the lives of children who lived within this institutional complex, including the difficult histories of separation, displacement and colonial care.

For Open House Hobart, visitors are invited to explore the church and discover how its architecture and history reveal a much larger story about faith, community and the changing social landscape of Tasmania.

Open: Sat 7 Nov, 9.00am – 4.00pm and Sun 8 Nov, 9.00am – 10.00am (with option for tours being taken in small groups)
