Join the Tasmanian Chapter for a talk at Design Tasmania, set against the backdrop of the Unsettling Queenstown exhibition from the Australian Pavilion at Venice. Speakers will talk about how they consider Country and First Nations perspectives when designing.

Speakers include Ashley Halliday (Ashley Halliday Architects), Julian Worrall (co-creative director of the 2023 Australian Pavillion ‘un-settling Queenstown’), Paul Wakelam (Paul Wakelam Architect) and Felicity Bott (Great Southern Dance).

The session will be facilitated by Sarah Rodes (artist and co-creative director of the 2023 Australian Pavillion ‘un-settling Queenstown’).

Calling all Open House lovers! Are you an architecture nerd, and dream of hanging out in awesome buildings around Hobart? Well, dreams do come true. We’re looking for volunteers to help out with Open House Hobart 2024.

As you know, our Open House programs wouldn't be possible without the amazing support of volunteers. They are the heart and soul – and friendly faces – of each Open House weekend. So why not volunteer with us on SAT 09 or SUN 10 NOV (or both days!) and help make Open House Hobart as smooth-running and memorable as possible.

Of course, we do have a tasty incentive: a free brekkie, and thank you drinks at the end of it all – who can say no to that?! I know we can't.

So if you have some free time and would love to help out, we'd love to hear from you. Continuing with the theme of understanding how Indigenous knowledges and engagement with Country, culture and community can inform practice, Jefa Greenaway. Jefa Greenaway is a descendant of the Wailwan and Kamilaroi peoples of northwest NSW. He is an architect, interior designer, academic, director of Greenaway Architects and Chair of Indigenous Architecture + Design Victoria (IADV), a not-for-profit providing support and advice regarding all aspects of architecture related to Aboriginal people in Victoria, including encouraging mainstream architects to be more engaged with Indigenous culture.

Design Tasmania @designtasmania is proud to present Unsettling Queenstown, the Australian representation at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2023. Haunted by a large-scale copper replica of the belvedere of Queenstown’s Empire Hotel, this show immerses audiences in the dark magnetism of Tasmania’s history and landscapes, opening unsettling perspectives on decolonising architectures and alternative futures.

On Saturday 3 August there will be two panel discussions:

2pm: Unsettling Queenstown’s Creative Directors will share the ideas behind the making of the Biennale exhibition

3pm: First Nations arts and cultural leaders will discuss issues relating to cultural renewal and colonialism. Panel: Aunty Theresa Sainty, Julie Gough and Ali Gumillya Baker (facilitator)

Doors are currently open to the Launceston Exhibition at Brickworks Design until tomorrow, Friday 7 June; before the exhibition relocates to Hobart on Thursday 13 June.

The exhibition displays the 35 projects entered into the 2024 awards program, capturing a breadth of new architecture being produced in the state.

As the sandwich boards slowly returned to our headquarters, it signified the end of the Open House Richmond weekend.

And what a weekend it was! Thank you to every single person who came out and supported this special one-off program. Preliminary numbers tell us you were very keen for a sticky beak.

Thank you to the amazing people who put up their hand to volunteer. Volunteers are our precinct managers, tour guides, stat-takers, architects, sponsors, building owners and custodians, way-finders, co-ordinators, hype-people and sponsors. Open House Richmond has an enormous amount of gratitude to every single person who donned one of our fashionable tees and helped out.

Open House Richmond officially starts at 10 am today (Sat 24 February)!

The Bureau of Meteorology predicts a sunny weekend, with temperatures reaching about 25 degree both days (far nicer than the 36 degrees I'm currently writing this in). Be mindful of high UV conditions and protect yourself with sunscreen and/or a hat and carry a water bottle with you.

So here's to a wonderful weekend taking in the sights - and architecture - of this fabulous little village in the Coal Valley. And do we have some gems for you. There's even a few wineries if you'd like a wee tipple along the way (you're in premium wine country, after all). If this is your jam, it might be good to have a designated driver #drivesafely.

With so many exciting places to visit and things to do as part of this special one-off program, we can't wait for you to get out and about and explore the beautiful Coal Valley.

RICHMOND INTERPRETATION PROJECT – JUST TURN UP!

RICHMOND INTERPRETATION PROJECT – JUST TURN UP!

Recognising the urgent need for improved interpretation of the village, Alex Miles Design was commissioned by the council to prepare the first three of an initial Six interpretation panels and objects. With nothing said about the district’s Tasmanian Aboriginal people, the first three, installed in late 2023, focus on telling stories of the Mumirimina people, whose country Richmond and the Coal Fiver Valley occupy.

Three members of the interpretation project will be at the riverbank site beside the bridge to explain the history, design, and storytelling approach used for these important improvements. Tracey Cockburn, Head of Community and Culture, and Chris Jordan, Landscape Architect, both from Clarence City Council.

Theresa Sainty, Tasmanian Aboriginal cultural consultant, will be available to discuss the project between 10 am and 12 noon on Sunday 25 February. They will present introductory talks at 10.00, 10.30 am, 11.00 am, and 11.30 am.

CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH – JUST TURN UP!

DESIGNER: Renovations by Mirella Bywaters (2016)

The heritage registered Congregational Church was built in 1873 to replace a nearby 1844 church in Torrens Street, demolished in 1876 following storm damage, its cemetery remaining and used until about 1920. The 1873 sandstone church is in the Gothic Revival style with buttresses, and a pointed arch doorway and lancet windows accentuated using moulding. The stone for the church was quarried at Butchers Hill but came to the church from the Richmond Goal as sections were demolished.

The new owners undertook major improvements, converting the church into visitor accommodation and adding a private residence at the rear. They overhauled the garden with substantial new plantings to create a private and charming oasis in the centre of the village. The space has incorporated recycled timbers from the floor and pews originally in the church with underfloor heating throughout.

GABY'S STABLES – JUST TURN UP!

The Gaby’s Stables are Richmond’s only surviving stables in original condition. Accessed by a concealed door in the IGA store, step back in time to discover a vignette of early Richmond.

The Richmond IGA Supermarket may look modern at first glance, but its origins go a long way back – it is believed to be one of the oldest general stores still operating in Tasmania. Built around 1836 the complex of buildings included a house, two shops, numerous outbuildings, a blacksmith shop and the ‘Old Stables’.

James Buscombe’s son sold the property in 1883 and in the 1890s, owner Alf Burrell ran a blacksmith’s shop here. The shop has been owned and/or run by many families over is long life, including: the Chapman, Nichols, and Gillow, Gaby (nearly 60 years), Plummer and Youldon families. Purchased in the 1970s by the Tzortzis family, it’s now run by son, Kosta Tzortzis.
