Law, Order and Modernism
What happens when a building for justice becomes a piece of modernist architecture in its own right?
Step inside the Supreme Court of Tasmania for a rare behind-the-scenes tour of one of Hobart’s most distinctive civic buildings. Join Supreme Court judges and architect Peter Partridge as they reveal the architecture, history and working life of Tasmania’s highest court.
Designed as a confident Modernist intervention in the historic heart of Hobart, the Supreme Court was conceived as an “alien object floating in the landscape”, while still responding carefully to the buildings and spaces around it.
Step outside and look at the relationship between the two court buildings. The open plaza creates a diagonal landscape connection linking St David’s Park, Parliament House and the waterfront, weaving the court into the civic life of the city rather than turning its back on it.
Inside, the architecture tells another story. Look closely at the courtrooms and you’ll discover a striking combination of Modernist forms and beautifully crafted Tasmanian timber joinery. The contrast between concrete, glass, timber and carefully controlled natural light creates spaces that feel both formal and unexpectedly warm.
Then venture beyond the public areas. This special tour offers access to parts of the building rarely seen by the public, including underground tunnels and criminal holding cells, revealing the hidden infrastructure that allows the court to function.
As you explore, judges will share insights into the judicial process and the everyday life of the court, while Peter Partridge provides a closer look at the thinking behind the architecture.
The building was recognised with the Australian Institute of Architects’ 25 Year Award for Enduring Architecture at the 2010 National Architecture Awards.
Come and have a look behind the scenes, explore the spaces where justice is administered and discover the unexpected architecture of Tasmania’s highest court.
